For our very first TEGLA blog post, in a series of behind the scenes articles about our luxury bespoke furniture and the homes we’ve helped create, we’re sharing with you every detail from our Georgian Townhouse Kitchen, featured on Channel 4 show George Clarks Old House New Home.

This three story townhouse sits proud in the centre of a sought after quaint cobbled street in the heart of Chester. A rental house for decades, it was carved up into bedsits and last renovated in the late 80s / early 90s. Our clients were renovating the entire house from top to bottom restoring its period charm. The brief for the kitchen was simple; create a functional and ergonomic kitchen in a traditional timeless style in keeping with the rest of the renovation.

When we first arrived, the kitchen was in a totally different part of the house, a relatively small room with one north facing window. When the house was built 200 years ago the kitchen would have been for staff, the larger lighter rooms were for entertaining.

We spent time with the family, including their two young children, understanding how they like to live. Their young boys love to bake, and craft. They make pizza from scratch as a family on a Friday night. They host impromptu parties with neighbours and both parents work full time, some of the week from home, so the kitchen is fast paced and well used. When we produced the designs we produced two options, one was a new kitchen in the existing kitchen space, and one was in this room – the dining room – the room in the house with the best light!

To create flow between the sofa area and the new kitchen, our clients needed to obtain planning permission to remove a wall, which gave us plenty of time to bounce ideas back and forth via Pinterest and WhatsApp to settled on the perfect finishing touches.

The island provides somewhere to sit but also houses some of the appliances, as we wanted to keep the run of wall with the large sash windows on clear. The tea and toast cupboard has slide and hide doors, behind it lives the toaster, coffee machine and microwave, so the kitchen looks sleek and
clutter free when the family are entertaining or relaxing. The canopy above the range provides a real focal point and a nod to the fireplace that was once in the chimney. The pull out cocktail cupboard makes great use of a void in the wall.

The colour on the units is Little Greene Paint Company, colour ‘Shirting’.
